A Wool Challenge

A small amount of fibre

Just a small wad of hand dyed wool fibre was given to me with a challenge, “Make something with it.” Now the fibre (not sure of the breed of sheep, may be merino) was hand dyed with acid dyes in the colours green, white, yellow, cream and black.

These colours made the challenge extra difficult to find a suitable outcome. Not for a baby. Not enough for a jumper or blanket. I considered spinning it, knitting with it, crochet, weaving, felting it, but nothing suitable came to mind…. It took quite a while and there was a deadline.

Then came a flash of inspiration. I decided on a lampshade. It was the simplest of ideas. First find a lampshade in a charity shop, easy. I used PVA glue to stick the roving to the outside of the shade. It was tricky because the roving wanted to stick to me too. Once I got the hang of it, it was plain sailing. I used very little roving and the outcome better than I imagined.

What do you think of my challenge outcome?
