Some British Sheep Breeds are rare which is why Paton and Daughter use their fleece to make rugs.https://patonanddaughter.co.uk/product/hebridean-fleece-handmade-felted-rug/ If we can use their fleeces and highlight their woolly usefulness, we can give these breeds a boost and help save the breed for the future.
There are 56 native British Sheep Breeds and 22 of those are rare. The Hebridean sheep has evolved to suit its environment. The outer Hebrides regularly experiences extremes of wind and rain but frosts are rare. The driest month, May will receive 17 rainy days and the wettest month, December, 25 rainy days and so we can appreciate that these sheep are resistant to foot rot unlike other breeds and so are pretty amazing. The lambs are born jet black but with age becomes brown then grey. Their faces and legs are not covered in wool but long black hair. Hebridean sheep are easy to keep.
Luckily for Paton and Daughter Hebridean sheep can be found in East Sussex and Kent. See how we make our rugs. https://patonanddaughter.co.uk/felted-rugs-made-from-fleeces/
